As you can see by the BIG thorns this plant is called Devils club for a reason. Right now the berries are turning ripe and a very pretty red and no longer green as they were last week. Don't eat them! Though the berries are poisonous they have been used by natives groups to kill lice (mashed up and put on body) and other parts of the plant has other medical uses.
