There's no such thing as a witch and Halloween

Happy Halloween!

An odd day of dress up and fun
When I was a child we sang these two songs in primary
(it was week days)
I loved these songs and finally got a copy to play for myself as a pre-teen.
I'm still not on my computer so can't make you a recording of the songs but they are very fun....enjoy

Click on music to enlarge and print, that doesn't mean this old music will be easy to see, he he!

I have been looking for this song for two months, I found myself singing it to my toddler granddaughter as we were deciding on a halloween costume for her After the first time she wanted to hear it over and over. I remembered part of the words, and wanted to teach it to her. Thank you for bringing back wonderful memories of my childhood primary experiences, Carol

Thank you so much for putting this on your site! (I love technology!!!!) I was so upset that my mom had thrown away the old primary music because I wanted to sing this to my kids,- but couldn't remember all the words!

I am so happy you are finding this music. When I lovingly saved so many things my hope was that one day there would be a way to share them with those that wanted to pass them along. How could I ever guess that such amazing things as the internet and computer key boards that can type as fast as I think would ever be a part of my life. I laugh out loud when I watch old tv shows and those poor folks are forever stopping at a pay phone to stop the crimals and save the damsels.

How glad I am you found my offerings!

Thanks for these songs. I quite sure, however, that there is a second page to "no such thing as a witch."

It had another verse and a different refrain in between. Something like:
Skeletons and goblins are only make believe. Folks dressed up in costumes just try to scare yooo-ooo!

Then another verse: When you hear the thunder and lightning and you're hiding in a ditch, don't cry out, without a doubt there's no--such--thing (sung differently) as a witch. 000000

Does this ring a bell?

You must have missed it..Both pages are there. You can have the whole song just look above.

I like Carol sang this song to my little granddaughter that is 3 last week and when I picked her up to come spend the weekend last night the first thing she said was lets sing there's no such thing as a witch. I knew I was missing some of the lyrics but she has loved singing it. Thanks so much for posting this. I can now teach her the right words. I noticed this was printed the year I was born. Thanks again Karen and little granddaughter Lizzie

Thanks so much for posting these songs. I taught my children to sing "No such Thing As a Witch" years ago without music. Now they can see that it is a real song. I've called my friends to see if they learned it in Primary. We've had so much fun. Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

I was so excited to find this song! I used to have the big yellow song-book that it was in, the one with the beautiful illustrations, but I can't find it anywhere. Thanks for bringing back some favorite childhood memories!!

well since we are talking about the song books for primary here is my talley. For as long as I can remember I was in Sunday school or primary music.

The blue book "little story songs" A tiny hard back book mostly all music is written by Fances K. Taylor. Lovely little songs for children. It was the book I grew up knowing the songs to when I was tiny. There is not a date in my copy but most the pages are barely there. I'm guessing 1940's or 1950's

Next the green hard bound "The Children Sing" mine is dated 1951
This is a lovely blend of great music! THE BEST! There is even prelude music in the back. This music feels good under piano fingers.

This orange hard bound ringed book "Sing with me" dated 1974 is the book I taught from as primary music leader when my kids were growing up. (There were several orange paper suppliments to this book as time went on) Some classic pieces in this book.

Now we have a paper ringed book with little pictures and mine is dated 1989. The music is simplified too much and your finger are in knots all in one octave. It's not at all fun to play! But the little colored pictures are really cute.

None of these books have the Halloween songs. The copies of Halloween songes you see above came from the Children's friend of the time!

Now if you know of books between these I'd love to hear about it and photos are welcome. I'd even like to hear what everyone's favorite songs are. If you are missing one I might just have it!

I have looked for this song for over 20 years and here you have it! I've even gone through years of old Friend magazines looking for it, but I guess I didn't go back quite far enough. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for posting this! I've remembered the words all these years, but so wanted to be able to play the music for my children and grandchildren. THANK YOU!!!

I second the thank yous! I too have been trying to find all the words for years. So excited to have them for my grandkids!

BTW, what year was that Children's Friend?

Fonnell/Grammie/mom said...

The year of this childrens friend was 1955. This is an oldie but a Goodie! You can click on all the music and it will enlarge and print to size. Still it is old and I have tried to take good care of it since I was a teen playing the piano in primary. That's a long time!

About 3 years since you posted this, I came across it tonight. I have such great memories of primary and this song! My sister remembered all the words (almost) and I play piano by ear, so I have played it and sung it over the years, but how great to have the sheet music from 1955!! Thank you and all the best to you and your blessed children/grandchildren.

Thank you Karen,
Primary sure has changed. I was never bored and loved all the music it was the highlight of our time there. I'm going to post another old song, about the church mice.

I was so delighted to hear all of these comments. “There is no such thing as a witch” was written by my Mother-in-law, Cora Sheffield. She was such a lovely woman. She loved to write music, we have a whole box of music that she wrote.

Dorthy how nice to hear Cora wrote lots of music. I’d love to hear more about her. Thanks for your note!
